Are Gluten Free Pancakes Good for You?

These Gluten Free Banana Pancakes can be a healthy choice (compared to other pancake recipes), but ‘Gluten Free’ does not necessarily mean ‘healthy’. Many gluten-free pancake mixes and recipes are still high in sugar and refined carbohydrates, which can cause blood sugar spikes and crashes. However, this gluten free option uses gluten free oats instead of flour, therefore these are a healthier option!

My Vegan Banana Pancakes (That Can Also Be Made Gluten Free…)

Here’s everything you need to make my gluten free banana pancakes..

  1. Ripe Banana: The ripe banana serves as a natural sweetener and flavor enhancer. It adds a rich banana flavor and moisture to the pancakes, making them softer and more tender.
  2. Dairy-Free Milk: The dairy-free milk provides the liquid base for the batter. It helps to create the right consistency and texture for the pancakes. It also ensures that the pancakes are suitable for those who are lactose intolerant or following a vegan diet.
  3. Olive Oil: Olive oil contributes to the overall richness and moisture of the pancakes. It also adds a subtle fruity flavor. Additionally, it helps to prevent the pancakes from sticking to the pan during frying.
  4. Vanilla Extract: Vanilla extract adds a pleasant aromatic and sweet flavor to the pancakes. It enhances the overall taste of the dish and complements the banana and cinnamon flavors.
  5. Sugar: Sugar provides sweetness to the pancakes. It balances out the flavors and enhances the natural sweetness of the banana. It also helps with browning the pancakes as they cook.
  6. Salt: A pinch of salt enhances the flavor of the pancakes and balances out the sweetness. It’s a common ingredient in baking that helps to bring out the other flavors in the dish.
  7. Cinnamon: Cinnamon adds warmth and depth of flavor to the pancakes. It pairs well with the banana and provides a cozy and comforting taste.
  8. Oat Flour: Oat flour is a gluten-free alternative to traditional wheat flour. It gives structure to the pancakes, helping them hold their shape, and provides a slightly nutty flavor. Oat flour is also a good source of dietary fiber.
  9. Baking Powder: Baking powder is a leavening agent that helps the pancakes rise and become fluffy. It creates air pockets in the batter, resulting in a lighter texture.
  10. Oil for Frying: The oil for frying prevents the pancakes from sticking to the pan and helps to achieve a golden-brown crust on the outside.
  11. Maple Syrup / Vegan Butter: These are optional toppings that add extra flavor and sweetness to the pancakes. Maple syrup provides a rich and distinct sweetness, while vegan butter adds a creamy element.

Frequently Asked Questions About My Vegan Gluten Free Pancakes

What Makes Your Vegan Banana Pancakes Gluten Free?

Banana pancakes are gluten-free because they do not contain wheat flour, which is the primary source of gluten. Instead of using wheat flour, banana pancakes are typically made using a combination of mashed bananas, gluten-free flour (such as rice flour or almond flour), and other gluten-free ingredients such as baking powder and non-dairy milk. This combination creates a batter that is free of gluten, making it safe for people with gluten sensitivities or celiac disease to consume.

Are These Pancakes Gluten Free (GF)?

They can be! It’s up to you. It all depends on what type of flour you use. If you use oat flour (you can simply blend oats you already have at home if you don’t have any oat flour pre-prepared), then sure, it’s going to be a gluten free banana pancake!

Can I use Aquafaba?

Yes! I love using Aquafaba. I haven’t used it in the recipe above, but you could maybe replace the oil with 2-3 tbsp of Aquafaba and see how it goes?!
