If you like an added kick of heat to your meals, then Homemade Chilli Crisp is the condiment you need. Made with crispy fried shallots, garlic, and chilli flakes, this tasty sauce is the most incredible accompaniment to any savoury dish! Drizzle it over noodles, pizza, toasties, salads, soups, roasted veggies or avocado toast – my personal favourite!
Ingredients
- 4 shallots peeled and thinly sliced
- 15 cloves garlic peeled and thinly sliced
- 1/2 cup sesame seeds you can also use chopped roasted peanuts
- 350 ml neutral oil Such as mild olive oil or rapeseed oil
- 1/4 cup chilli powder I use mild chilli powder
- 1/4 cup chilli flakes
- 1 tsp smoked paprika
- 1-2 tsp salt to taste
- 1 tbsp sugar
Instructions
- In a saucepan, heat the oil over medium heat.
- Once the oil is hot, add the chopped shallots and garlic. Fry them until golden brown and crispy. This will take around 15-20 minutes. Be very careful not to burn them.
- Remove from the heat and strain it through a sieve, preserving the infused oil in a bowl underneath. Set aside the shallots and garlic for 5 minutes, as they cool they will crisp up.
- To a medium sized bowl, add the rest of the ingredients, then pour in the oil and mix well. Add the crispy shallots and garlic and mix again. At this point you can taste test to see if you require any more salt or sugar to your taste.
- Pour into your airtight jar and enjoy. Store in the fridge.
