Tofu Bacon (Vegan)

Vegan Tofu Bacon

As much as I love shop-bought vegan bacon, I try to limit highly processed vegan meat substitutes where I can, and this homemade Tofu Bacon is my go-to when I’m craving a BLT. It’s smoky, crispy, chewy and so delicious, as well as being a great source of plant protein.

Ingredients

  • 1 240g (approx) block firm tofu drained and pressed

For the marinade:

  • 1/3 cup dark soy sauce
  • 3 tbsp maple or agave syrup or you can use a little sugar
  • 2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp liquid smoke
  • 1 tbsp tomato puree
  • 1-2 tbsp water optional, to thin the marinade

Instructions

  • Slice the tofu into thin, bacon sized strips.
  • Make the marinade by whisking the ingredients together, if it seems too thick you can add a little water.
  • Add the tofu strips to a wide container (with a lid) and pour over the marinade. Cover and shake gently so that the pieces are all covered with the marinade.
  • Cover and let marinade in the fridge for 30 mins – 24 hours.
  • Preheat the oven to 200C and line a baking tray and lay out the strips evenly, brush them with some of the excess marinade.
  • Bake for 12 minutes, remove and flip the pieces over then bake again for 10-15 minutes until crispy. Enjoy!
