‘Tis the season for hot beverages and binge watching Netflix (specifically Gilmore Girls – it isn’t Autumn if Gilmore Girls isn’t on repeat). And this Peanut Butter Hot Chocolate is ideal. It’s comforting, smooth and so delicious.

Obviously, the most essential ingredient in this recipe is peanut butter. I always have peanut butter in the cupboard (an absolute kitchen essential for me) but if you don’t, make sure you choose the smooth kind. I’m currently using this one but I also love this one.

Also, check out my Cupboard Essentials page for more of the ingredients I like to make sure I always have in while consuming a plant based diet.

You can totally experiment with the other ingredients with this peanut butter hot chocolate recipe. Any plant milk/dairy free milk will be absolutely fine! Personally, I love using oat milk (I like this one and this one). You could also even try different nut butters if you’re fancying it! Almond butter or cashew butter would be absolutely delicious.

You could also use any sort of sweetener you have in your cupboard for this hot chocolate! I used maple syrup, but sugar would be totally fine too. This is the maple syrup I have been using recently.

How To Make Peanut Butter Hot Chocolate…

Here’s the ingredients you’ll need to make this easy peanut butter hot chocolate recipe:

  1. Dairy-Free Milk (of choice): Using dairy-free milk makes this recipe vegan-friendly. It’s a good alternative for those who are lactose intolerant or following a plant-based diet. Depending on the type of dairy-free milk you choose (such as almond, soy, oat, coconut, etc.), the flavor and texture of the hot chocolate can vary slightly.
  2. Smooth Peanut Butter: Peanut butter not only adds a rich and nutty flavor to the hot chocolate but also contributes to its creaminess. Peanut butter is a source of healthy fats and protein, which can make the hot chocolate more satisfying.
  3. Cocoa Powder (or Cacao Powder): Cocoa powder is responsible for the chocolate flavor of the hot chocolate. It’s a common ingredient in hot chocolate recipes. Cacao powder is a less processed alternative that retains more of the natural nutrients found in cocoa beans. Both options provide antioxidants and a deep chocolate taste.
  4. Maple Syrup (or Sweetener of Choice): Maple syrup adds sweetness to the hot chocolate. It’s a natural sweetener derived from maple trees. Using a sweetener of choice allows you to control the level of sweetness to suit your taste. Keep in mind that some sweeteners might have varying flavor profiles, so they could influence the overall taste of the hot chocolate.
  5. Pinch of Salt: Salt might seem like an unusual addition to sweet recipes, but it can enhance the flavors and balance the sweetness, making the hot chocolate taste more complex and well-rounded.

Is Peanut Butter and Chocolate a Good Combination?

Yes, in my opinion at least, peanut butter and chocolate are a FANTASTIC combination. The contrast between the rich, nutty flavor of peanut butter and the sweet, deep flavor of chocolate creates a harmonious balance that many people find incredibly satisfying. The creaminess of peanut butter can complement the velvety texture of chocolate, resulting in a mouthwatering and indulgent experience.

Is It Okay to Heat Peanut Butter?

Yes, it’s generally safe to heat peanut butter, and in fact, heating it can be a delicious way to enjoy it in various recipes. Peanut butter becomes softer and more spreadable when heated, making it easier to incorporate into dishes or to drizzle over foods. Here are a few things to consider when heating peanut butter:

  1. Microwaving: If you’re using peanut butter in recipes like a peanut butter hot chocolate, you can mix it with other ingredients and then heat the mixture. Be cautious not to overheat it, as peanut butter can become very hot and might splatter in the microwave. Heat it in short intervals, stirring in between, until it reaches the desired consistency.
  2. Stovetop: When using peanut butter in cooking or baking, it can be heated gently on the stovetop over low to medium heat. This can help it to become more liquid and easier to work with. Again, be sure to stir frequently to prevent burning or sticking.
  3. Melting for Drizzling: If you want to melt peanut butter for drizzling over desserts or dishes, you can do so by gently heating it until it becomes more liquid. This can be done in a microwave-safe bowl or on the stovetop using low heat.
  4. Baking: Peanut butter is often used in baked goods like cookies and brownies. The heat from baking will naturally soften the peanut butter and incorporate it into the recipe.

However, keep in mind that prolonged or excessive heating can cause the oils in peanut butter to separate and make it greasy. It’s also important to be cautious when heating peanut butter in the microwave, as it can become very hot quickly. Always use microwave-safe containers and stir frequently to ensure even heating.
